Trade with Japan gets a duty cut boost
India new trade agreement with Japan that seeks to more than double trade to $25 billion by 2014 through duty cuts came into force today.
Under the deal, Tokyo has scrapped import duties on 87 per cent of the goods that it buys from India with immediate effect, while New Delhi has dropped tariffs on 17.4 per cent of its imports from Japan. The comprehensive economic partnership agreement, signed in February, eventually seeks to abolish 94 per cent of bilateral tariffs within 10 years.

At present, trade with Japan stands at a little over $12.6 billion. The import from Japanese consumer goods such as mobile phone – including SIM and memory cards, calculators, chargers, compact discs, DVDs, ad video cameras will become duty free.

Japanese ambassador Akitaka Saiki said the business communities of the two countries should make the best use of this arrangement. “This arrangement will definitely facilitate both ways flows of trade and investment,” – he said.

Havells Forays into Home Appliances Market
Electrical equipment make Haveils India on Thrusday announced its entry into the domestic appliances market by launching a range of products including food preparation, garment care, home comfort, cooking and brewing. The company plans to garner sales of `500 crore from he segment in four years. Haveils India Joint MD Anil Gupta said in a statement. He said the firm will invest up to `80 crore on marketing and R&D of small appliances in 2-3 years. The domestic appliances market is estimated at `5,200 cr.

China Pips US to be Top Smartphone Market
China passed the US top become the world’s largest smart Phone market by volume in the third quarter as the devices became cheaper and more widely available, research firm Strategy Analytics said.
Shipments in China reached a record 23.9 million units, up 58% from the second quarter, the Boston-based research firm said in a statement. That compares with a 7% drop to 23.3 million units in the US.
“China is now at the forefront of the worldwide mobile computing boom,” Neil Mawston, an analyst at strategy Analytics, said in the statement. “China has become a large and growing smart phone market that no hardware vendor, component maker or content developer can afford to ignore.”
The Chinese market is growing as wireless carriers offer more smartphones, including cheaper devices running Google Inc’s Android software and subsidized versions of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, the research firm said.
